A diminutive South Korean-born woman who calls herself the Black Widow devoured her opposition to set a new world record for eating chicken wings just outside New York yesterday.

Sonya Thomas showed off her deadly bite, scoffing a staggering 181 wings - some 4.86lbs (2.2 kilograms) - in just 12 minutes at the National Buffalo Wing Eating Contest to claim her 29th world record.

The 43-year-old, who only weighs 105lbs, saw off world No1 Joey Chestnut - he managed 169 chicken wings - and was delighted to have chomped her way to victory.

'I'm so happy!' said 5ft Thomas, gobbling up her third National Buffalo Wing Eating Contest. 'Sometimes if I try to chew too much I slow down. I used my hands more than the mouth. But that was just an appetizer!'

In the first time they have ever gone up against each other Chestnut was favoured by many to take the title.

But the Black Widow showed Chestnut that he had bitten off more than he could chew at Buffalo - a town about 300 miles northwest of the Big Apple, said to be the birthplace of the wings.

They pushed each other really hard,' said Drew Cerza, who founded the festival in 2001. 'Joey is so strong. He's got great jaw strength. But Sonya's so fast with the hand.'

Thomas joined the International Federation of Competitive Eating in 2003 and quickly rose to the top of the ranks, beating competitive eaters such as Ed 'Cookie' Jarvis and Eric Booker.

She set the previous wings record in 2005, when she ate 174 in 12 minutes and has also held eating records for oysters, hard-boiled eggs, cheesecake and jalapeno peppers.

Thomas's nickname refers to her ability to regularly defeat men four to five times her size and her most famous result was when she scoffed 37 hot dogs in 12 minutes.
