Over 1,000 Chengdu residents hit the streets with no shoes last weekend in order to set a Guinness World Record.

Guinness has confirmed that the 1,141 people, who walked one kilometer, have set the new record for biggest barefoot group walk.

The event was organized as part of the Infinitus 2010 World Walking Day (China) in part to encourage civilians to walk more in order to maintain a healthful lifestyle.

Chengdu local Pu Guihai, 43, dragged along more than 100 of his colleagues to cheer on the group of walkers. "I've never walked barefoot on the street before," he said. "After today, I think that walking barefoot is really quite comfortable."

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Kai returned to Sichuan for the event. The Luzhou native led a crowd of more than 7,000 on a separate (and shoed) 4.2-kilometer stroll around the city.

The Guinness World Record for the world's largest Chinese whisper was also set in Chengdu, in November 2006.
