Longest Crucifix Arm Hold World Record set by Reuben Simanu

Not too many people can make an overly-large leather lounge suite look small but Whakatane's Reuben Simanu has no difficulty at all.

The 155kg giant is amused at the television advertisement about his attempt at smashing a Guinness world record.

He is to star on TV2's NZ Smashes Guinness World Records on Sunday.

"I'm getting a bit of stick about the T-shirt I was wearing," Simanu said.

During the final stages of taking on the record for the longest crucifix hold, he said he shifted the weight from his biceps to his back and in the process, his T-shirt travelled up a couple of centimetres.

"I got a text message yesterday from a mate suggesting I should wear my own shirt and not my son's next time," Simanu said.

Simanu's attempt at the crucifix hold involved holding two 10kg weights at a 90-degree angle for longer than one minute 18 seconds.

He was flown to Auckland and spent only four hours at Sylvia Park before boarding another plane home on the day of the attempt.

"I got treated pretty well up there and also had a bit of fun."

Leading the laughs was the host of NZ Smashes Guinness World Records Marc Ellis, who also had a go at the crucifix hold.

"Marc got to about 40 sec and started yelling it was easy and told the producers they didn't need the big man and could let him go home," Simanu laughed.

"By 50 sec, he was yelling abandon ship and letting go of the weights."

Simanu holds New Zealand, Oceania and Commonwealth bench press records.
