It was a record-setting weekend in southern Manitoba. On Saturday 200 combines broke the Guinness World Record for the most harvesters working on the same field.
"It's proof what farmers can do and what the Lord can do for us. He can make things happen," said lead combine organizer Melvin Penner following the record-breaking harvest.
"The word awesome gets over used but this was that kind of experience," said Jack Froese, a Winkler-area farmer. "We were coming down the field from the north to the south and seeing a wall of combines coming from the other direction. It was really good to see."
Combines came from farms across southern Manitoba with drivers coming from as far away as Victoria, B.C. John Deere 6600s, Gleaner L2s, Massey 760s and early New Holland TR series combines were among the older and smaller machines taking part.
"When you talk to some of the guys and find out how far they've come to this. It's a lot of dedication that goes into this," noted Ted Dyck, another combine operator.
Organizers split the mile-long field in half with the spectator area and farm show in the middle of the field. After the official countdown, they started harvesting at 1.5 miles per hour, moving, for the most part, side-by-side toward the middle of the field.
The event also included a farm show, concerts and equipment demonstrations. A hopper-bottom bin was also auctioned off for $23,500. All the money raised at the event will send children in developing countries to Christian camps run by Children's Camps International.
