A long scroll, featuring more than 40,000 handprints from northeast China's Jilin Province, was recorded as the largest handprint scroll in the world Thursday by the Guinness World Record.

The waterproof scroll, covering 3,715.86 square meters, was presented at the Yitong River to celebrate the opening of the third Changchun International Automobile festival on Thursday in the provincial capital of Changchun.

After nearly four hours measuring the scroll, Wu Xiaohong, a notary public for Guinness World Record, announced at the scene that the handprint scroll is 3,715.86 square meters and sets a new Guinness world record.

The handprint scroll now becomes the largest of its kind in the world, about 115.86 square meters larger than the previous Guinness world record set in India in April.

The scroll is made of plastic, with a "2010" pattern in the middle surrounded by more than 40,000 handprints. It is fastened to a huge floating board on the river to assure that it never sinks.

"Everyone's handprints are different. We made the scroll to show local people's good wishes for the future of their hometown," said an organizer of the automobile festival.

Besides the festival, the 7th Changchun International Automobile Fair will also be held in Changchun from July 15 to 22.

The fair attracts 132 automobile manufactures representing 137 automobile brands and will display 927 automobiles at the exhibition center.

Changchun is a major automobile manufacturing base in China.
