About 40 kids from the Roscoe area helped set a world record in swimming on Thursday morning. Catch the Wave Swim Club was part of the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a worldwide event designed to promote safety.

As kids started their lesson in Roscoe at 9 a.m., kids all around the country as well as those in Zambia, Lebanon, Dubai, and beyond all took to the waters with their instructors. The goal was to raise awareness of drowning prevention. The total number, more than 10,000 as of Thursday afternoon, will be submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest swim lesson, according to Catch the Wave Swim Club owner Debbie Stoffregen.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death of children ages 1-14. Research shows that if a child doesn’t learn to swim before the third grade, he or she likely never will, according to www.worldslargestswimminglesson.org.
Stoffregen said close to 40 kids participated with eight instructors, two life guards and three helpers. The children were broken up into groups and taught a 45-minute class in the water. The lesson covered all aspects of safety such as following pool rules, making sure a life guard is on duty and not diving into shallow water. Children then learned how to safely get in and out of the water and how to help those who may have fallen in. The lesson then covered opening one’s eyes under water and blowing bubbles, and concluded with front and back floats and different swim strokes.

Catch the Wave Swim Club is a Stateline Area Club providing year-round swimming instruction in a warm water pool at The Gardens at Prairie Rose, 4711 Prairie Rose Drive. Lessons are available for all ages, those with special needs and more. It also offers a swim team at Boylan Catholic High School. Its had more than 600 children go through lessons. Currently 250 kids are enrolled.

This fall Catch the Wave Swim Club will be opening a 5,000-square-foot facility at 1917 Blackhawk Blvd., South Beloit, about a mile north of Prairie Hill Road. The indoor facility will be open seven days a week. It will feature a salt water pool. Stoffregen said salt water is great for people with allergies to chlorine. The new club will have memberships available, open family swims and early morning swims for adults in addition to the other lessons provided.

Stoffregen and her husband Troy opened Catch the Wave Swim Club 3.5 years ago. She’s been offering swim lessons most of her life. She started lessons out of her home before renting facility to keep the club going.
