Some 10,000 people are expected to gather in the Bosnian town of Tuzla on Friday in an attempt to set a new world record for the largest waltz.
The northeastern Bosnian town, which already holds the world record for simultaneous kissing, has been preparing for the event for months, Zlatko Berbic, the owner of the local radio station Kameleon, which is organising the giant dance, told Balkan Insight.
Berbic said that all generations of Tuzla residents, ranging from primary school children to pensioners, have been taking dancing lessons over the past two months hoping that they will help their city waltz its way into the record books.
The city authorities and public schools have supported the organisers and the waltz has been included in the school curriculum as part of physical education classes, Berbic said.
“We re-introduced dancing into schools and that in itself is much bigger than just setting the largest waltz record,” Berbic said.
The current Guinness world record for the largest waltz was set in 2009 in the British city of Bath when 315 couples waltzed in one of the central squares.
Tuzla’s event will be held in the central Freedom Square on Friday afternoon, followed by a concert by popular musicians from Bosnia and Croatia.
