Yeoval will have to wait another year to enter the Guinness World Record official listing, but put up a gallant effort one stitch at a time.
Needing a little more than 11 kilometres of French knitting, the small community gathered 5.5 kilometres in about five months, which gained praise from organisers Nicolette Vaughan, Alan Kerin, Kate Kerin and Nerrissa Carney at last week’s Yeoval Show.
But the organisers are optimistic of smashing the record in time for next year’s show.
“The current record is held by a gentleman in the UK who has been knitting since 1989,” Mrs Vaughan said.
“So if we have 5.5 kilometres after only five months then we are well and truly on the way to beating the record if everybody keeps up the momentum.”
The Yeoval women applauded all those who got involved during the past months - from young to old, to those who live near and far.
“We’re lucky to have some very dedicated knitters living within our community as well as within wider communities.
“Local schools have all helped out, Myrna Miller contributed more than one kilometre and the Valla ladies from up near Coffs Harbour also got involved.”
The organisers said Cabonne Council had put up some funding and lots of people had donated spare wool balls they had in the house.
“Once we break the record, the French knitting will be donated to the Yeoval Historic Society to turn into rugs and the Baptist Church has also expressed interest.”
