Two brothers of Mahalingapur town in the district have made it to the `Limca Books of Records' for the year 2010 with their record-setting feat on Karadi, a musical instrument.

Ashok Karadi and Chennamalla Karadi have been performing on Karadi since they were 15 years old. Karadis have the unique ability to communicate to each other the words/ sentences, through the instrument and vice-versa. If a person whispers any word/ sentence into the ears of one of the brothers, he emits certain sounds on Karadi instrument, while the other brother tells exactly what the former was told. With their being familiar in Kannada, English and Hindi language, the Karadi is made to "talk" in all these languages.

The technique is not a part of usual Karadi concert, but has been developed exclusively by the Karadi brothers, who are the members of Kala Jyoti Veerabhadrappa's Karadi Majalu Sangha here.

Karadi Majalu (Mela) is a unique folk music of the state. It consists of music instruments like tala, dollu, shehnai, shruti, surya vadya and chandra vadya. The music, popular in culture circles, is usually performed on auspicious days and festive occasions. The art form has been considered "classical" in national/ international music scene. The state approximately has 500-600 teams of Kardi Mela. But what makes the Karadi brothers different from them is their ability to "talk" through the instrument.

The art is being passed on from generations to generations. Their forefather Veerabhadrappa Karadi is said to have invented the art of playing the words.

The Karadi brothers, along with their troupe, have performed at various festivals across the country. Their profession is weaving, while their passion remains playing or "talking" on the Karadi.
