Oliver Kern - Skis 60,000 vertical metres in a day set World Record

A 36-year old German skis into the record books. Again. Oliver Kern is something of a ski record addict. He already has 4 records and now he has a couple more.

He clocked up 60,874 vertical metres in a day and in one hour managed 5,550m.

He already has the most resorts in a day and the rather odd  one of skiing in 3 different resorts in a single day that are separated by The Atlantic Ocean.

Just for good measure he also has the same feat but in resorts separated by The Pacific Ocean.

He achieved his new vertical metre record in the Italian resort of Speikboden.

By the end of the day he had skied a 5.5 km long run 58 times as well as additional slopes adding up to a total of 361 kilometres (226 miles).

The run had a height difference of 1,022m and with a few other slopes thrown in for good measure he reached his goal.

He began at 06.55am and an hour later the first world record was set with more than 5,550 vertical metres of skiing under his belt.

The previous record was 4,490m.

After the first world record was set, Kern went on skiing for a further 14 hours by which time he had clocked up 60,874m.

He finished at 10.09pm and completed his day with a head torch so he could see in the darkness.

He chose Speikboden for his record attempts because of the smooth slopes, fast gondola and the ideal terrain for clocking up the piste miles in as short a time as possible.

Kern, has visited more than 700 ski resorts across the world.

Last week we reported on a new world record set in Japan for the number of people skiing down a 1km slope while holding a rope.

We did raise the question whether it was a significant record.

We won't be doing so with this one even though some of his records are, er,  slightly bizarre.

Well done Kern.

Here's a  Oliver Kern YouTube video of his run including details of what he ate on the gondola.
