World Water Day, 22 March 2010, is a crucial moment in the fight against the global sanitation and water crisis that's killing 4000 children every single day.
Just one month later, politicians from across the globe will gather in Washington DC to discuss what they need to do to fulfill some of the most basic rights of the world's citizens - access to a safe toilet and clean water.
In order to influence this meeting globally it is planned to make a stand for sanitation & water. The World's Longest Toilet Queue is organized by WaterAid India on 20th March, 2010 at T.T Nagar Chouraha at 2.00 p.m.
Highlights:
* 4000 children worldwide die due to lack of safe water
* 2.5 billion people around the world lack sanitation facilities
* Around 1 billion people lack safe water facilities
* 43 % of people in India lack sanitation facilities
* 19% of people in India lack access to safe water.
* Every year 1.8 million people die due to water related diseases
Notes for the editor:
* The World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year to reinforce the right to safe water
* Government of India has set the target of March 31, 2012 to have 100 percent toilet coverage in rural areas
* To meet this target, the country has to construct 48 toilets a minute non-stop till March 31 2012
* 66.5 crore Indians defecate in open i.e. half of India's population which is more than double the population of entire USA
* 1.5 million children die of diarrhea every year in India
* Water related diseases have an economic burden of $600 million a year
What is World's Longest Toilet Queue?
It is a mass mobilization event to demand for real changes for improved access of water and sanitation. It is an attempt to get recognition from Guinness World Record by bringing together thousands of campaigners from across the world
What is the rationale?
* To make a stand for sanitation and water.
* To mobilise stakeholders to force governments to act.
* To influence governments to commit for taking action to provide access to both clean water and safe sanitation to poor
Mr. Mathew Luckose, Regional Manager, WaterAid India says "Every person should be a part of the queue to show solidarity & concern for the people deprived of water and sanitation facilities".
"Become part of a global movement this World Water Day".
