Premium oat cereal brand Mornflake is gearing up to ‘porridge season’ this Autumn by proudly sponsoring the Manchester finale leg of the world premiere tour of Porridge, the stage show of the much-loved sitcom. The theatre production is scripted by the original creators Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais and produced by Calibre Productions, the team who brought Dad’s Army and ‘Allo ‘Allo to the stage to much acclaim.
It will run for the Christmas period at The Lowry, Salford Quays from the 21 December until 16 January.
To commemorate the partnership, the world record for the biggest bowl of porridge was smashed today at The Lowry in Salford, Greater Manchester when 171.9kg of the healthy breakfast cooked from Mornflake Superfast Oats was served to hundreds of people in the theatre.
Chef Colin Rostron broke the existing world record, which was set at 81.2kg in Edinburgh in 2007, by stirring 27kg of oats and 150 litres of water with a specially commissioned paddle over heat for just over an hour.
The World Record aims to raise awareness of porridge oats as the ultimate healthy breakfast option due to its low GI and slow energy release and cholesterol managing properties.
As part of the sponsorship deal, an innovative sampling programme will see Mornflake oats sachets printed with show and product information distributed to theatre goers from the end of September as well as to those who see Porridge during its run.
Branded sachets will also be distributed by promotional teams at Manchester’s Piccadilly Station and by cast and crew staffing a Pop Up Porridge Bar ahead of the opening night.
Additional branding features in The Lowry cafe where flapjacks made from Mornflake oats will be free with coffee.
Boards featuring archive imagery and telling the 300 year history of the Lea family, who have milled oats in Cheshire since 1675 and produce the award-winning Mornflake oat cereals 14 generations on, will be on show.
Staff t shirts, roll up banners, 4-sheet posters and theatre literature and a publicity campaign featuring a world record attempt for the Largest Bowl of Porridge will all support the partnership.
Richard Jones, marketing manager at Mornflake, says, ‘We’re really proud to be supporting such an exciting show at one of the region’s leading arts venues, as it comes to Cheshire, the home of Mornflake, and on its world premiere UK tour.
