Percussionists from Rock Hill High School broke the Guinness world record for the longest single drum roll Saturday, as 28 students combined to sustain the roll for more than 27 hours. That shattered the previous record of just over 24 hours.

The event began at 5 p.m. Friday at the Rock Hill Galleria and ended at 8 tonight to claps and cheers from dozens of onlookers. The event also raised around $3,600 for the band, said Michael Skellett, the band's percussion director.

One student, junior Jason Piers, broke what is believed to be the longest stint by a single drummer on a single roll by going for 4 hours, 10 minutes.
