On 29 May 2008, a new Guinness World Record for the longest line of sandwiches was set in Piove di Sacco, Padova, Italy in the Centro Commerciale Piazzagrande (Piazzagrande Shopping Centre).

3,000 sandwiches formed a record breaking line which measured 1,378.34 m (4,522 ft 1 in) long. The sandwiches were made using a tonne of bread filled with delicious Italian mozzarella, and were cooked inside the shopping centre itself.

The night prior to the record attempt, under heavy rain, 158 members of staff from the Piazzagrande centre worked together to set up the venue for the day of the attempt, cutting bread, slicing the mozzarella, and setting out more than 400 tables.

At 5 p.m. on the day of the attempt, with the help of the local basketball team - la Piovese - the line of sandwiches was assembled. Carlos Martínez,

Guinness World Records adjudicator, checked the sandwiches and measured the record breaking distance. Once the end of the line was reached, and in front of the cheering crowd, the new Guinness World Record was officially announced. The organisers took this opportunity as well to announce that all funds collected during the day would be used to build a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

There was no better way to celebrate the achievement than enjoying of one of the history making sandwiches!
