On the evening of the 31 May 2008 in Spoleto, Italy, during the celebration of the annual international wine event, Vini nel Mondo, the new Guinness World Record for the largest glass of sparkling wine was unveiled.
Guinness World Records Adjudicator, Carlos MartÃnez, travelled to the Umbria region of Italy to measure the record breaking glass and its volume in the presence of the duo of radio presenters, Fede e Tinto - artistic directors of the event; guest of honour, Elisa Isoardi and the creator of the glass, the artist Massimo Lunardon.
At the moment the Duomo (cathedral) bell tower started to toll, the glass began to be filled with 16.5 litres (3.63 gal) of Italian sparkling wine, impressing visitors who came to Spoleto from all around Italy and abroad, and crowded the Piazza Duomo di Spoleto. One after the other, the bottles of wine filled the 2.03 m (6 ft 7 in) tall flute, made out of pure glass in only one single mould-blow, using old artisan techniques.
Once the glass was completely and successfully filled, the newly established
Guinness World Record was immediately announced and celebrated with - of course - a toast of sparkling wine shared by the entire Piazza, and the feeling that the ancient city of Spoleto had once again made history.
