World Tallest Cactus Plant Guinness World Record in India set by SDM College

Dharwad: A cactus plant, grown near SDM College of Dental Sciences near Sattur has entered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest plant. Cereus peruvianus in botanical terminology, the plant has a height of 78.8 feet.

The plant was planted on August 15, 2002 and it belongs to Cactaceae family. It has white flowers in funnel shape which is 20 cm long. But it does not have any leaves. From March to October is the flowering season.
Before it, the world record was in the name of another cactus in Narayanpur of Dharwad. It was 72 feet high when it entered into the records book in 2004.

According to prof Parimala of the department of Botany at JSS College, the plant has its origin in South America,and in India,it is planted in hedges and is rarely cultivated. The flowers bloom during night and closes in the morning. Therefore, it is also called night blooming Cereus. It also has a red colored fruit called Peruvian.
